Game for the Competitive Crew: Windjammers Game Review

I personally have had my eye on the physical copy of this game for a long time. And as of today, I was able to finally pick up a copy for cheap. Having the game, I now get to tell you about this fun arcade game that was brought back to life on the Nintendo Switch! Come join me as I talk about Windjammers!

So what is this game?

Windjammers is a fast-paced, head-to-head arcade game where two players face off on a court, and throw discs at the opponent’s goal zone to score points. It is incredibly fun and intensely addictive. Originally released on the NEOGEO system, Windjammers perfectly blends sports and fighting games. Sharpen your throwing and sliding skills, use the best techniques to defeat your opponents, and become the world’s best player!

What does this game have to offer?

Five new game modes: Arcade, Infinite, Local Play, Online Quick Match, and Ranked play! Online Versus: for the first time ever, face other players worldwide in ranked matches and compete in the top leagues. There’s six unique characters to chose from and get good with, six playable environments to help make a lot of lasting memories, and two unlock-able mini-games: Dog Distance & Bowling. So basically if you haven’t had a chance to play the old game, it is new and improved!

Is the community still alive?

The community is very much alive, to the point they are still doing cash tourneys out and around the world- also becoming a part of E-Sports as a whole! There are people still streaming from time to time (Including me very soon)! They still sell merchandise, and it is still available on the Nintendo Store. There are Facebook groups as well that are just for the game. I still think its best played with friends in person and at parties! Even Limited Run made a special collector’s edition of the game for the community! (Make sure to go check that out if you are interested).

After all this time… how does it handle?

The controls are different since it was ported to the Nintendo Switch. To be frank, the controls are easier to pick up now compared to the arcade version. This makes it super friendly for people that are interested in the game. Plus if you really need the help, they actually included a manual (unlike a lot of Switch games nowadays- which is really nice to see).

Joe’s Thoughts

So obviously I liked the game already just from the arcade version of it.I have made plenty of fun memories with my friends already playing the game; now I can make even more memories at different events! The movement is still good and the controls are really easy to pick up and learn for 1st timers. Now the graphics might not be for everyone because they stick the with old school look; which I really enjoy and appreciate a lot. So I say if you get a chance to play this game, go for it and do not sit on it!

Final Score: 8.6/10
